I picked up a Kristin Hannah’s book Winter Garden to read because I needed something light. I needed to lose myself in a fun story.
Instead this book took me into the horror of the siege of Leningrad. What happened there?
At first I was upset. I needed something light. But then I kept reading. And I realized that this book was the forerunner of The Nightengale. The historical fiction, rich with suffering and horror
The book flipped back and forth between a modern story of a fractured family finding their way back and forth and the story of the mother and all that she lived through.
I don’t want to give away any plot points and say much more than that.
Despite my surprise, I really enjoyed this book in the end. It’s no beach read, but it’s an enjoyable family drama.
